Preparing for Missions

Saturday · November 7
Day 9 of 10

Pray for Workers

Matthew 9:35–38

Key thoughtGod’s mission is not finished. He calls us to pray for workers and to prepare our hearts to worship.

Before Reading

“Listen for what Jesus sees when He looks at the crowds, and what He tells His disciples to pray.”

Lectio · the reading
Matthew 9:35–38English Standard Version

35And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Meditatio · reflection

Jesus traveled through all the cities and villages, teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and healing. When He saw the crowds, He had compassion. They were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then Jesus said something striking: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Jesus did not say, “Go fix the problem.” He said, “Pray.” Before we go, we pray. Before we act, we ask God to send workers. Missions begins with prayer — prayer for the lost, prayer for workers, prayer for our own hearts. Tomorrow is Sunday. Come ready to worship, ready to listen, ready to ask: “God, what is Your mission, and how can I join You in it?”

The Day’s Charge

Come to Sunday ready to worship. Pray for Justin by name. Pray for one person you plan to share the gospel with. Ask God to prepare your heart to hear His Word.

To Ponder
  1. What did Jesus see when He looked at the crowds? What does that teach us about God’s heart for the lost?
  2. Why does Jesus tell us to pray for workers before we go? What does that teach us about where missions starts?
  3. As you prepare for tomorrow, what is one thing you want God to teach you about His mission?
Oratio · prayer

Pray for Justin and missionaries around the world — for courage, protection, and fruit. Pray for your own role in God’s mission. Ask God to prepare your heart for tomorrow’s worship — to come ready to hear His Word and respond to His mission.

Amen
