We Are Here to Glorify God

Romans 15 · 3rd–6th grade · 25–30 minutes

Big idea
We glorify God when we follow Jesus, love others, and seek their good.
Big picture question
What is our mission as Christians?
Answer
Our mission is to make disciples of all nations by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Key passage · Psalm 96:3
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!

Teaching rhythm Read, then Observe, then Explain, then Apply. Read the Bible aloud while the children follow along. Give them a listening question first, then ask them to find answers in the verses.

4Romans 15:14–216 min
5Gospel, apply & pray5 min

28 minutes planned · 2 minutes of flexibility

1. Why Are We Here? 2 min

Ask: “What does it mean to glorify God?” Explain simply: To glorify God means to show how great and worthy He is by what we say and do.

Set the scene: Paul wrote to Christians in Rome who came from different backgrounds. He wanted them to live together in a way that honored God.

Say: “As we read Romans 15, watch how Jesus changes the way we treat others.”

2. Put Others First and Welcome Them 9 min

Read aloud Romans 15:1–7 ESV

1We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Before reading

“Listen for whose good we should seek and who gives us the example to follow.”

Look back at the Bible

  • Verses 1–2: Should we only please ourselves? No. Seek our neighbor’s good and build them up.
  • Verse 3: Who is our example? Christ, who did not please Himself.
  • Verses 5–6: Why should believers live in harmony? So together we glorify God.
  • Verse 7: Why should we welcome one another? Because Christ welcomed us, for God’s glory.
Teaching pointWe don’t earn Jesus’ welcome by being kind. Because Jesus has welcomed us, we should welcome and serve others.

Apply: “What would welcoming someone look like if they were new to our class or different from you?”

3. Jesus Gives Hope to All Kinds of People 6 min

Read aloud Romans 15:8–13 ESV

8For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.” 10And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” 11And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.” 12And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” 13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Before reading

“Listen for who gets to praise God and where our hope comes from.”

Look back at the Bible

  • Verses 8–9: Did Jesus come only for one group of people? No. God’s mercy reaches the Gentiles too.
  • Verse 13: Who fills believers with joy and peace? The God of hope.
  • Verse 13: By whose power can we abound in hope? The Holy Spirit.
Teaching pointJesus brings together people from different backgrounds. Our unity and hope come from God, not from everyone being alike.

4. Share the Good News 6 min

Read aloud Romans 15:14–21 ESV

14I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 15But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God 16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. 18For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, 21but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”

Before reading

“Listen for what Paul wanted people to hear about Jesus.”

If pressed for time, read verses 15–16 and 18–21.

Look back at the Bible

  • Verse 16: What ministry did Paul receive? To serve Christ by proclaiming God’s gospel to the Gentiles.
  • Verse 18: Who was working through Paul? Christ.
  • Verses 20–21: Where did Paul want to preach? Where Christ had not yet been named.
Teaching pointSeeking others’ good includes sharing the greatest news: Jesus saves sinners. Paul wanted people who had never heard about Jesus to know Him.

5. Gospel Connection, Application and Prayer 5 min

We have all sinned and cannot make ourselves right with God. Jesus lived without sin, died for our sins, and rose again. We are forgiven and brought into God’s family through faith in Him. Jesus is not merely our example; He is our Savior.

Ask: “How can you seek someone else’s good this week?” Take two or three responses. Then ask: “How could you help someone learn about Jesus?”

Follow Jesus Love others Share the gospel Glorify God

Read aloud Psalm 96:3 ESV

3Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!

Close in prayer: Thank God for welcoming us through Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to help us put others first, welcome people who are different, live in peace, and tell others the good news.
